America’s Happiest States

WalletHub’s 2026 Happiest States in America ranking placed Hawaii at the top, followed by New Jersey, Utah, Idaho and Maryland. WalletHub assessed the happiness of all 50 states based on 30 factors, including social connections, leisure time, jobs, health, finances and safety. With the highest life satisfaction, the second-lowest adult depression rate, and almost 84% of adults in good or better health, Hawaii was named the happiest state.

With the lowest prevalence of depression in the country, the largest percentage of supportive partnerships, and the second-lowest rate of separation and divorce, New Jersey came in second.

Utah came in third place with the highest economic security score, the lowest rate of divorce and separation, and the fewest weekly labor hours. Idaho and Maryland came next in the rankings, with Nebraska, Connecticut, Minnesota, California and New Hampshire completing the top ten happy states.
